A missed call at 9pm is a lost roof. The homeowner with water in their ceiling isn’t leaving a voicemail. They’re calling the next roofer on Google.
That’s why AI phone answering went from gimmick to standard equipment fast. I asked my Facebook feed: If you’re using AI for after hours, weekend or backup phone answering and having a great experience, better than voicemail, what system are you using?
Fifty comments later, here’s the honest scoreboard.
Disclosure: Hook Agency is a listed marketing partner of Alivo, the most-recommended tool in this thread. Two of the commenters below are tied to Alivo too, and we’ve noted that next to their quotes. The tally counts only the contractors who aren’t affiliated.
- SEO, AEO, Google Ads and LSA for roofers
- Published pricing, nothing hidden
- You own your website and ad accounts
“Not only is our site great, the ongoing guidance we get from Hook is exactly what we needed.”

The scoreboard: AI answering tools contractors recommend

| Broccoli AI | 4 | Recommended by contractors and office managers. |
| Same Day AI | 3 | One user reported 82 appointments booked by AI agents in a month. |

| Single mentions | 1 each | Podium, Housecall Pro’s AI assistant, GoHighLevel, xAI voice, Cactus AI, Reception.ai, Advancelly, Quo (mixed review) |
Alivo: the crowd favorite for roofers
Alivo was the most-named tool by a wide margin. Contractors kept bringing up how it fits the CRMs roofers already use.
If you don’t want to switch CRMs, Alivo plays nice with a lot of CRMs and has a great ROOFLE integration. I work with a number of roofers using Alivo with JobNimbus or AccuLynx. It works well.
Second mention is ProLine and their AI agents, but you need to be on it as a CRM or willing to switch systems. Many roofers I work with are using ProLine with great results.
I’ve heard good things about Avoca, especially for the HVAC folks.
Chris Diroll, Ready Diroll Consulting (an Alivo service partner)
Alivo booked us three overnight last night. That’s not uncommon. One of the best things we’ve added this year.
Mark Aumen
The last case study we did went from a 20% booking rate to 60% the first month, and in our post-study follow-up they were still right around 50%.
Michael Gogan, Alivo
That’s a vendor’s own case study, so treat it as a ceiling, not a promise. But even half that lift on your ROOFLE and web form leads is real money.
Same Day AI: booking appointments at volume
Same Day AI. As of yesterday our AI agents have booked 82 appointments month to date. Crazy, never thought it was possible.
Mervin Wickey
Notice he said “agents,” plural. Same Day AI and Avoca users both talked about using AI for outbound too, not just answering.
Avoca: speed to lead on forms
Avoca, because we could leverage speed to lead on forms and make it do the outbound.
Jennifer Blackwood
This is the bigger idea. The best setups don’t just answer the phone. They call web leads back in seconds, before the homeowner fills out a form on a competitor’s site.
Build your own?
I built my own using Twilio and Vapi. Done in 30 minutes. I recently moved to GoHighLevel for 4 of my companies and it works fine. One more thing: most software is a white label of Vapi, Retell or GHL.
Mark Hurd
Really easy to build your own. ElevenLabs + Retell + Twilio. Most any agent can crank this out in an hour or two.
Bjorn Marshall
True, and worth knowing when you’re comparing prices. But building the bot is the easy part. Tuning it to your scripts, your service area, your CRM and your calendar is where the work lives. If you don’t have someone technical on staff, buy it.
Watch out for credit burn and connectivity
Using Quo now and not happy with connectivity issues. The AI they use burned through credits so fast I couldn’t even tell you if it worked well, because it ran out.
Valerie Heck-Garcia
Ask every vendor how pricing works. Per minute, per call, per credit? What happens during a hailstorm when call volume triples? Get it in writing.
Treat the AI like a new hire
The best advice in the thread wasn’t about which tool. It was about how to run it.
At the end of the day, the one thing all of these AI tools have in common is that you’re still going to need to treat them like a new team member. Give it feedback, spend time with it, nurture it, hug it, love it, in order to get the best results.
Chris Diroll, Ready Diroll Consulting (an Alivo service partner)
He added that the hugging part probably fits well at the Owl Roofing office. He’s not wrong.
Takeaways: picking an AI answering service for your roofing company
- Start with your CRM. Pick a tool that writes leads straight into JobNimbus, AccuLynx, ProLine or whatever you run. A bot that books into a black hole is worse than voicemail.
- Cover after hours, weekends and overflow first. Those are the calls you’re losing today.
- Use it for speed to lead. Have it call web and ROOFLE leads back in seconds.
- Know the pricing model. Ask what storm season does to your bill.
- Listen to the calls every week. Fix the script, the questions and the handoffs like you’d coach a new CSR.
- Track booked appointments, not answered calls. That’s the only number that pays for it.
