A dark-themed interface on Hook Agency’s website displays AI-generated recommendations for plumbing services, highlighting search results for bestplumbingco.com and acmeplumbers.com. An AEO-powered overview box cites reputable sources, offering actionable SEO insights for contractors.

“Cody, we’ve been doing SEO for two years and now someone’s telling us we need AEO. Is that actually a thing or is it just a rebrand?”

I get this question constantly. The honest answer: it’s a real thing, it’s not a replacement, and the reason it sounds confusing is that most people explaining it are trying to sell you something new instead of just telling you what changed.

The short version:

  • SEO gets your website ranked in Google so homeowners find you by clicking a link
  • AEO gets your business recommended inside AI-generated answers so homeowners find you before they ever click anything

I built our AEO service alongside Tim. Some things we tried worked. Some didn’t move the needle at all. What’s in this guide is what actually held up, not what sounded smart at the time.

First: What SEO Is and What It Still Does

SEO is not dead. The contractors saying it is have usually never built an organic lead pipeline that actually works. Or they stopped investing in it and then blamed the channel.

A September 2026 survey of 131 SEO professionals reported by WebProNews found that relevance, backlinks, and content quality remain the top three ranking factors. Google Business Profile signals still account for roughly 32% of local pack ranking weight according to Whitespark’s 2026 local ranking factors survey. For a contractor, ranking in the local pack still drives a significant volume of calls. That is not a channel to walk away from.

What SEO Gets You

A well-executed SEO program produces:

  • Organic rankings in Google’s Local Pack and traditional search results
  • Traffic from homeowners who click through to your website and read about your services
  • Long-term visibility that does not disappear when you stop running ads
  • Page authority that compounds over months and years

For a contractor with a well-optimized site and a strong local SEO program, the cost per lead from organic traffic is a fraction of what paid ads cost over time. That math is still real.

Where SEO Stopped Being Enough

Here is the problem. As of mid-2026, research suggests that up to 60% of searches now end without a click. When Google’s AI Overview appears on a results page and answers the homeowner’s question directly, a meaningful share of them never visit any website at all.

A contractor who ranks well in traditional SEO but is absent from AI Overviews is invisible at the exact moment the homeowner is reading the answer. That is the gap AEO closes.

What AEO Is and Why It Exists

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. It is the practice of structuring your content and business signals so that AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini can find your business, trust it, and recommend it when a homeowner asks a relevant question.

That last part is the key difference. SEO is about being found when someone searches. AEO is about being recommended when someone asks.

The Shift That Made AEO Necessary

According to a July 2026 survey of 2,650 US consumers by L.E.K. Consulting, 46% of AI users now begin their purchase research on a standalone AI platform like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity. That is up from 25% in 2024. Traditional search has fallen from 43% to 24% over the same period.

That is not a gradual shift. That is an inversion. And homeowners asking an AI tool “who should I call for HVAC repair in Bellevue” are not looking at a list of ten links. They’re getting a direct answer with named businesses in it. If yours is not one of them, you are not in the consideration set.

BrightLocal’s 2026 research documented AI tool usage for local business recommendations growing from 6% to 45% in a single year. That trajectory has not slowed.

What Tim Said About This

Tim recorded a video specifically on the AEO vs SEO question, and one thing he said stands out: “It’s almost like AI is a little easier to gain right now. Like search engines in the early days. There’s a gold rush. There’s probably more opportunity now than there will be in five years to lock in your company, your brand as a reputable cited resource.”

He said it differently than I would but the point is the same. The window to get established as a trusted AI-cited source is open right now. The contractors who move on this early will be harder to displace later.

AEO vs SEO Side by Side

The simplest way to see the difference is to map what each one targets, how it gets built, and what it produces.

The thing I want contractors to notice in that table is the last row. AEO does not work without SEO foundations. A contractor with a weak, thin, or inconsistent website presence will struggle to get AI citations regardless of what AEO tactics they add on top. You build the base first.

Why This Hits Contractors Specifically Hard

Home service buying decisions are local, urgent, and research-driven. That combination makes contractors one of the categories most directly affected by the shift to AI-generated answers.

Homeowners Are Already Asking AI Instead of Searching

Think about the actual behavior. A homeowner whose AC stopped working at 9pm is not scrolling through ten blue links. They’re asking ChatGPT or Perplexity who to call in their city. A homeowner planning a roof replacement is asking an AI tool what to look for in a contractor before they ever search Google.

The research on how homeowners research contractors shows that the research stage now frequently starts before Google is involved. AEO is what gets contractors named at that earlier stage.

There Is No Page Two in an AI Answer

In a Google results page, a homeowner can scroll past results that don’t feel right. In an AI answer, there are three to five businesses named. Full stop. If yours isn’t one of them, the homeowner moves on without knowing you exist.

There is no ad you can buy to appear in a competitor’s AI recommendation. No bid you can raise. You either built the signals or you didn’t. This is different from paid search, and it matters that contractors understand it before their competitors do.

Why your business might be invisible to ChatGPT covers the specific gaps that explain why this happens even when traditional SEO is strong.

How AEO and SEO Work Together

AEO does not replace SEO. It layers on top of it.

Google has stated that the same core quality systems that power traditional search also power its AI features. A contractor with poor SEO fundamentals will struggle with AEO because AI tools will not cite a business whose website signals low quality or low relevance. The foundation is the same.

What They Share

Both reward:

  • High-quality, specific content that answers real homeowner questions
  • Review depth and recency
  • A complete and active Google Business Profile
  • Consistent business information across directories
  • A fast, crawlable, technically healthy website

If you have been doing serious SEO work for the last two to three years, you have a meaningful head start on AEO. The additional work is not starting over. It is restructuring existing content and adding specific signals.

The generative engine optimization guide for home services covers the next layer above AEO, where GEO builds on both.

What to Actually Change

The changes that improve AEO performance are almost entirely the same changes that improve SEO performance. There is no either-or decision here.

Lead Every Page With a Direct Answer

AI tools pull from the clearest, most direct answer they can find. If your page buries the response in three paragraphs of background before getting to the point, a competitor’s page that leads with the answer will get the citation instead.

Write like you’re answering a homeowner standing in front of a broken furnace at 9pm. Not like you’re building a legal case.

Add FAQ Schema to Pages That Have Questions

FAQ schema turns question-and-answer content into machine-readable signals that AI tools can extract and cite directly. FAQPage, HowTo, and Article schema are the three types most consistently linked to AI citation performance.

This does not mean adding a fake FAQ section to every page. It means structuring the real questions homeowners ask into properly marked-up content. The pages that already answer common questions well are the ones to start with.

Build Entity Signals Across Every Platform

Your business name, address, phone number, service categories, and geographic area need to appear identically on your website, GBP, Yelp, BBB, Angi, and every relevant directory. Inconsistent information confuses both Google and AI tools, and both drop you as a result.

Tim put it plainly in the video: “AI is looking at the top ten or twenty results and aggregating the information. It’s like an aggregator. We need to make sure those results are making your brand look good.” That’s the whole entity signal argument in one sentence.

Get on Best-Of Lists

Tim made a point in the video that most AEO advice skips entirely: find existing best-of lists for your trade and your city, and get your business added to them. “Best roofers in Seattle,” “best HVAC companies in Bellevue.” These lists are exactly what AI tools pull from when homeowners ask for recommendations.

Some of these lists are paid directories. Some are editorial. Some can be influenced by submitting your information. The principle: find what AI is already citing and become part of it.

The full how-to for this and everything else in AEO is covered in the answer engine optimization guide for home services.

Keep Content Fresh

Pages not updated in six months or more lose AI citation visibility significantly faster than fresh ones. A quarterly content review, updating statistics, adding new FAQs, refreshing examples, keeps your content competitive for both traditional rankings and AI citations.

For contractors, the pages covering pricing, service areas, and seasonal topics are the ones most vulnerable to going stale.

What You Do Not Need to Do

A few things circulating out there that are not worth the energy:

  • Separate AEO content and separate SEO content. One well-structured, answer-first page serves both
  • Abandon paid search to make room for AEO. It’s additive, not a swap
  • Rebuild your site from scratch. Audit what you have, add schema to the strongest pages, update stale content
  • Hire a specialist AEO agency before doing anything. The changes in the section above are things your current marketing partner can implement this quarter

What We Are Seeing Across Client Sites

Contractors who already had solid SEO foundations, strong GBP presence, and good review volume saw the fastest AEO gains once they added schema, updated content structure, and cleaned up their entity signals. The work compounded quickly.

Contractors with thin content or inconsistent GBP information were essentially invisible in AI answers regardless of how they ranked on Google. The two disciplines either compound each other or undermine each other. There’s no middle.

The most practical thing Tim said in the video: “Find what’s being referenced in AI search results and affect what you can affect.” Start there. Ask ChatGPT or Perplexity for the best contractor in your trade and your city. See what it cites. Those are the sources you need to be part of.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between AEO and SEO?

SEO optimizes your website to rank in traditional Google search results so homeowners find you by clicking a link. AEO optimizes your content and business signals to appear inside AI-generated answers from tools like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity, so homeowners find you before they click anything. Both serve different parts of how homeowners now research contractors.

Does AEO replace SEO for contractors?

No. AEO builds on SEO foundations. A contractor with poor SEO fundamentals will struggle with AEO because AI tools will not cite a business whose website signals low quality or low authority. The two disciplines work best when built together.

Why do contractors need AEO specifically in 2026?

Because homeowners are increasingly using AI tools to research and choose contractors before they open Google. A July 2026 L.E.K. Consulting survey of 2,650 US consumers found 46% now start purchase research on AI platforms, up from 25% in 2024. Traditional search fell from 43% to 24% over the same period. Contractors absent from AI answers are invisible at a high-intent stage of the homeowner’s decision process.

What is the fastest change a contractor can make to start with AEO?

Restructure existing content to lead with a direct answer, add FAQPage schema to pages that contain questions, ensure business information is identical across all directories and the Google Business Profile, and update any page not refreshed in the last six months. None of these require starting over.

How long does it take to see results from AEO?

Initial AI visibility improvements are realistic within weeks of implementing structured content and schema changes. Substantial citation gains compound over three to six months of consistent work. This is faster than traditional SEO timelines but still requires patience and consistency.

Can a contractor work on both AEO and SEO at the same time?

Yes, and this is exactly how it should work. The foundational changes overlap significantly with standard SEO work most contractors are already doing: strong GBP, consistent citations, helpful content, fresh updates, and FAQ schema. A contractor’s existing marketing partner can implement both without requiring a separate engagement.

The Window Is Open Right Now

Early in any channel, the barrier to appearing is lower and the advantage of getting there first is higher. That’s exactly where AI search is in 2026. The contractors who move on this now will be harder to displace later.

SEO built the foundation. AEO extends it into the conversations happening on AI platforms before a homeowner ever opens a browser. Run them together and they compound. Ignore one and the other loses its edge.

For home service businesses who want both working together, that’s what we build. See our home services AEO service and the home services marketing strategy guide for where all of this connects.
