Masculine color schemes? It’s 2021 dagnabbit can’t we get over the old masculine-feminine anatomy dichotomy?
Well in marketing – I look for what is effective in communicating with particular groups, and sometimes yes that requires a little bit of good old-fashioned generalization. Color affects how people identify with the world, and what they choose to purchase or keep around. These masculine color schemes reflect my inherent bias and deeply underground emotional identifications with my masculinity.
Or they’re just color schemes I think dudes will like – but it sounded good didn’t it? (And yeah it’s probably partly true).
Perhaps we can do away with masculine as an adjective for these color schemes (after all, what does it mean to be masculine?). Instead, let’s call them tough, strong, or maybe even gritty color schemes. If you ask 100 different people what “masculine” means, you might get 100 different answers. Traditionally, masculine would be associated with “strong” or “tough”, but not anymore. So, instead of defining your color scheme by feminine or masculine, use more objective adjectives (like soft, dependable, trustworthy (BLUE!), modern, etc.).
