If you build your website yourself on Squarespace, Weebly, Webs or Godaddy site builder, it’s almost a given that there are going to be issues with search engine traffic and accessibility.

I’ve heard it said that half of ‘Search Engine Optimization‘ is just making sure that the site is built correctly from the beginning. That meaning that the links are easy to read for humans and search engines, hierarchies of pages are intuitive and easy to navigate, and that you’re using simple things like meta descriptions and alt tags to tell search engines what an image depicts when adding images.

To be fair, if you’re working with a professional on a website – with a Content Management System such as Drupal, Magento, WordPress or any other more serious website platform, everything is more likely to be thought through and considered – not just the alt tags, meta descriptions and so forth. So can you make a SEO friendly website on Squarespace? Likely – is it the easiest, most professional, or best way to do that? No.

Why does SEO matter at all? Is this a crucial point?

It’s incredibly important. Google ‘Financial Services Minneapolis’ and the first hit ‘Minneapolis Financial Group‘ is likely to get a undeniably larger amount of people coming to their site looking for financial help.

Can you imagine what that means for their business and bottom line?

In short: Being higher up in the search results for searches that have a high intent to buy – means your business earns more money.

Keeping SEO at the heart of any web build

Because I know that web design alone doesn’t ensure that you will value my services, I make absolute sure that I’m considering SEO aspects while building new websites. In WordPress means using alt tags, writing meta descriptions for key pages, crafting a strategy with you to get the right amount of content on your main service pages, and pushing the limits of the latest and greatest in the field.

SEO Changes

The reason I offer month to month SEO services is because the opportunity to make more money on your website is so large with Search Engine Optimization and it changes all the time.

There are always more things we can do to make your website get ranked higher in search engines. Here are a couple that I focus on in an ongoing way with monthly SEO clients:

  • Targeting high intent keywords that people likely to buy would be searching for.
  • Optimizing the technical aspects of your website in an ongoing way to better attract search traffic.
  • Getting links through outreach and guest posting elsewhere on the web to create more authority in Google’s algorithm
  • Creating deeper content pieces and a content strategy to constantly be getting Google’s attention and create more opportunities for ‘long tail searches’, which just means longer strings of text that people are searching for.

No matter who you choose for web design, ask what they are doing for your Search Engine Optimization

It’s crucial to be up front that this is high priority for you when building a website. A beautiful website just doesn’t cut it anymore, and we need to be intentionally creating content to feed search engines, and making our websites as ‘easily digestible’ from the search engine algorithm’s approach as possible – and there are some things a web designer / developer can do out of the gate to make that as solid as possible.
