Have this post read to you in a natural voice, so you can do other things:
Are there really website companies out there that will scam you?
You better believe it!
Just like any industry out there, there are people making money off of people out there that, unfortunately, just don’t know any better. Which is how they’ve been able to pull it off for so long.
This is the type of activity that we want to help stop and educate as many people out there as possible with useful and helpful information so they can have the confidence to handle their marketing.
See how website companies scam small businesses.
Free is usually something that I have no problem getting behind.
After all, a free website? I feel like you would be a fool not to take that… Right?
Well, the quote “nothing in life is free” really comes into play here and is a good fit for how you should look at getting a “free” website.
The thing with free websites is that it often means that you are going to be paying one way or another. One of the ways they get you to do this is through monthly fees that are way higher than they should be for that site. Not only will they charge you way more than they should every month, but they will continuously try to upsell you just to get the basics of what an official website should already have.
So when it comes to a free website, it isn’t as great as it seems, and you really will end up paying for it in one form or another.
But, a free website, though? C’mon, that’s way too good to be true. You should know better. 😉
High Hosting Fees
There is something that a lot of the companies that offer to host websites out there aren’t telling you, and that thing is hosting is cheap.
Honestly, I can see the temptation to charge high for hosting services because it can be pretty profitable for the people that are doing it.
But here’s the thing. You can go to GoDaddy, WPEngine, or Blue Host and look at their hosting fees and see how cheap they are compared to the website companies offering those services for your website.
These website companies are buying it from them for very cheap, turning around and selling it to you for a couple of hundred dollars and making a nice little profit on it.
So when it comes to high hosting fees, make sure you are not getting ripped off.
Renting a Website
Honestly, the idea of renting a website just doesn’t make much sense to me, and here’s why.
When you rent a website, you’re paying for that same platform month after month without having any updates or changes to it.
Instead of investing your money into a new website for your business, you’re wasting it on a website that is getting more and more out of touch with current trends and aesthetics, which might not seem like a big deal, but can have a pretty significant effect.
When you get visitors on your site, you want to look at least like you’re still relevant. This is where the problem of renting a website for ten years comes into play. If you have a website that looks old and outdated, it can send the wrong message to your visitors and send them running in the other direction.
It doesn’t make sense that even years into renting the same website year over year, you’re still paying the same price even though it is basically a dinosaur in the world of websites.
That sure sounds like a scam to me and is a trap you shouldn’t fall for anymore.
Website companies saying they do SEO
There are many website companies out there saying that they do SEO. But do they really is the question?
Sure, they’ll do the simple things like meta titles and descriptions, alt. Text on images, or even make sure you have a site map. But make no mistake about it, this is not going to move the bar and is only about 5-10% of what an actual SEO company would do with your site.
When you do SEO with an agency like us here at Hook that knows what we’re doing, you can expect things like content marketing, backlinking, technical updates, and monthly reporting going into your SEO strategy.
These are the types of activities that will build your leads and generate more of your ideal customers onto your website.
So when it comes to SEO, be careful, and make sure you understand what exactly they are going to be doing, or in this case, not going to be doing. This way, you won’t end up paying for subpar services that don’t move the needle as much as they should.
Unfortunately, there are more than a few companies out there that are taking advantage of small businesses and using these types of scammy services so they can make more of a profit.
So be sure to do your research before deciding to work with a company and see why their prices are the way they are.
Check around with other agencies, get their take on pricing and services offered, and see how they add up. Maybe someone has a higher price because they’re just flat out good at what they do and are worth the money. But sometimes people will build their price because they know people won’t do the research and will pay it to them.
I know I said it several times, but I want this to stick in your head, DO THE RESEARCH BEFORE YOU BUY!!!!
