How to Get Your WordPress Site Preview to Look Nice on Facebook

You just finished building your website for your brand and you’re ready to start sharing it with your network. You’ve double checked all the content and images and it’s perfect. You’re proud of all of the hard work and hours that you or your team put in to cross the website completion finish line. So you draft that perfect post, copy and paste that brand spanking new site link, and send it off into the Internet.

This is a crucial moment because not only do you get to showcase your single most important marketing piece for your company, but the visual design and information on your site can be the first step into forging essential relationships for your brand. And making sure you nail that first impression is crucial.

To ensure that you crush that first impression to your network on Facebook, I’m going to go through some simple steps to make sure that when you copy and paste that link into your Facebook post, the preview of your website shows up with a full image, title, and description.

Step #1 – Download & Add YOAST SEO plugin to your site

I won’t go too deep into what SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is. Chances are you’ve heard of it and have a general idea of the basic principles of it. You may even already use YOAST SEO plugin on your site. It’s possible you use a different plugin for SEO. For the sake of consistency and talk about what I know best, we’re going to run this tutorial based around the Yoast SEO plugin. I know there are others out there, but this is the plugin that we recommend using at Hook Agency. It’s reliable, frequently update, and there is a big community of users to help work out any issues you may have.

If you aren’t sure how to add a new plugin to your WordPress site, follow these steps.

  1. Login to your WordPress admin panel
  2. Hove over “Plugins” on the left-hand side
  3. Click “Add New”
  4. Once the page loads, in the top right corner type “YOAST SEO”
  5. The plugin results will load, and YOAST SEO will be the first option.
  6. Click “Install” on the YOAST SEO plugin. Wait for it to install.
  7. Click “Activate”

See that was easy, now you’re ready to move on.

Step #2 –  Configure the YOAST SEO plugin.

I won’t provide a step by step instructions on how to configure the YOAST SEO plugin because they do an excellent job of that already on their website. After you install and activate the plugin, follow this guide to get started.

Alternatively, you can skip ahead if all you want is the nuts and bolts of this tutorial.

Step #3 – Go to your posts page and find the page that is set as your Home Page. This will have a note next to it that says “Home”. Click “Edit” that page.

Step #4 – Once the page editor loads, scroll to the bottom of the page to the YOAST SEO box.

  1. At the top of the box, you’ll see a tab that says “Facebook” click that tab to open the social media tag options.
  2. The Facebook tab isn’t broken into three sections, the title, the description, and the featured image.
  3. For the title, enter in the name of your brand. Something I’d like to point out here is that it can sometimes be helpful to also add to long dash and a tagline of sorts. If your company was called “Fern & Co”, it might be more helpful to add what it is you do so the title ends up being “Fern & Co – Digital Marketing That Matters.”
  4. Below that you can enter a description. Considering this is the homepage of your website, I would recommend a description of 3-4 sentences that are high-level about what your brand is. So if we’re writing a description for our company “Fern & Co” you could write something like:
  5. Fern & Co is a digital marketing agency in Minneapolis, MN. We specialize in digital marketing campaigns and experiences focused on the sustainability industry. It is our mission to work exclusively with brands who seek to bring change to our world by reducing their production footprint and by giving back to nature.
  6. Below that is an area for a featured. What I like to do is put the company logo over an image that represents your brand. What’s important though is that the image needs to be sized to the exact specifications for Facebook. Facebook recommends 1200px (wide) by 630px (tall).

Once the details are into the post, click “update” to save.

Step #5 – Propagate the Facebook Preview

Once you’ve added the tags, head over to this link below…

https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug

This is a nifty tool Facebook created to help test the preview for links and the open graph tags that you just set. Simply copy and paste your URL into the field and click “debug”. What this does is tells Facebook to scrape your site for the appropriate information to make a preview display. If you entered the tags correctly from the steps above, your link should display like this.

Now you can share a post on Facebook with your website looking it’s best!

Troubleshooting:

Sometimes when you first scrape your link with the Facebook debugging tool, the image doesn’t show up. Wait a few minutes then click “rescrape” and “debug” again a few times. Sometimes it doesn’t quite stick. If you can’t get the information to show up at all, I recommend looking at YOAST SEO’s getting started guides.
