Should construction companies be on Houzz, HomeAdvisor, Thumbtack, Angies List, etc?
Just keep in mind:
- Experiment a little, but generally resist their aggressive sales tactics on these platforms (alot of people consider HomeAdvisor leads to be a scam for instance, because they give them to so many people and charge them all.)
- Really pay attention to what works on that particular platform – what works on one doesn’t always work on all
- Be lightning fast when responding to leads. (I’m talking first 5-10 minutes)

Hey, how’s it going, it’s Tim Brown the construction company marketer. I had the pleasure of chatting with my buddy Josh, from Northface Construction. We were talking about whether construction companies should be on Houzz, HomeAdvisor, Angie’s List, Thumbtack, etc. My response to this when people ask me is usually YES; you should be on every single directory that you can possibly be on. The key is to resist the aggressive salespeople of that particular directory, for the most part.
Now, I also think you should experiment with little bits of paid on each of these. Josh was doing really well with paid on Thumbtack, but other ones like HomeAdvisor and Angie’s List, generally he’s come to the conclusion that there’s not a lot ROI (Return On Investment) there. So it’s really about experimenting with as many as possible. I think it’s really important that you need to understand that every single platform has its own particular style and conventions. So what works on Houz might not necessarily work on Yelp. What works on Thumbtack might not work on HomeAdvisor, etc.
You really need to think about the platform and how those leads come, and what you’re up against. As my friends Josh said, you need to have speed, number one. A lot of these platforms are essentially serving up leads to multiple people, and you have to respond very quickly. That’s probably a good consideration for any type of lead that comes in, whether it’s on your website or through social media.
